What Do I Do If...

1. I want to report a nuisance property in my neighborhood?
Please "Call City Hall" at 419-936-2020 to report nuisance properties.  The representative will need to know the address of the property that you wish to report.  You may remain anonymous, or you can request to be updated on the situation as information is returned to Call City Hall.  A complaint can also be filed on-line by clicking here.

2. What do I do if I feel I’ve been cited unfairly by Department of Neighborhoods, Division of Code Enforcement?
If you feel the Division has cited you unfairly, you may appeal.  Generally, the appeals process requires that you appear in person, post a $50 bond and request a hearing before the Nuisance Abatement Hearing Appeals Board.  This board meets once per month and at your hearing, you will be given an opportunity to explain to the Board why you should not have received a citation.  If the Board approves your appeal, the bond will be refunded to you.  Please see the paragraph on your notice from the Department regarding appeals.  You must appeal within the time limits stated on the notice.

To start this process, please call the Supervisor of Code Enforcement at 419-936-3618 to schedule an appointment to file the appeal.

3. I receive orders from the Department of Neighborhoods, Division of Code Enforcement for my property?
If you receive orders from the Division and feel they are in error or have questions, please call the inspector listed on the order.  The inspectors work 6-7 hours of their workday in the field, so please be patient, they will call back.

If you receive orders but need more time to comply, please send a written work plan and request for extension to the inspector.  Our address and fax number can be found at the bottom of the letter.

Ignoring orders can lead to criminal legal action being pursued against you.  It is never a good idea to ignore the orders.  Orders may be appealed, as above.

4. I receive a Notice of Liability from Code Enforcement for my property?
A payment coupon is attached to the notice for ease of payment.  Please mail payments to the One Stop Shop, One Government Center, 16th Floor, Toledo, OH  43604.  Please include the “CE” number on the payment coupon if you are making a partial payment so it will be applied correctly.  Do not send correspondence to the Division of Code Enforcement with your payment as this will cause a significant delay in it reaching it’s intended recipient.  Notices of Liability may be appealed as above.  If the fine remains unpaid, it will be sent to a collection agency.  To prevent this, please pay within the time specified on the Notice.

5. I see someone illegally dumping in my neighborhood?
Call the Clean Sweep hotline at 419-245-3340 to make a report.  The Strike Force team will follow up and issue a citation when possible.  Please provide as much information as possible, such as license plate numbers from involved vehicles, names and addresses of violators (if known), etc.

6. I see a house posted for demolition and I wish to purchase it for rehabilitation?
The City generally does not have ownership of the properties on the demolition list.  You will want to check the ownership at the Lucas County Auditor’s office.  You will need to contact the owner and make any arrangements to buy the property from them.  If you are successful, you will need to file an appeal of the demolition order.  Please contact the Supervisor of Code Enforcement at 419-936-3618 to do this.
